Vuity Eye Drops: A Guide to What They Do and Can Do For You

People often think of vision as something that can be corrected through glasses and contact lenses. However, for many Americans. These options are not preferred. Vuity™ (pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) is an FDA-approved eye drop to treat age-related Blurry Near Vision (presbyopia) in adults.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the term for the normal aging of the eye that makes people with good vision suddenly start to see things as blurry around age 45. It can affect both eyes at the same time or just one eye at a time. Presbyopia develops gradually. You may first notice these signs and symptoms after age 40:

  • A tendency to hold reading material farther away to make the letters clearer
  • Blurred vision at normal reading distance
  • Eyestrain or headaches after reading or doing close-up work

You may notice these symptoms are worse if you are tired or are in an area with dim lighting.

Causes

To form an image, your eye relies on the cornea and the lens to focus the light reflected from objects. The closer the object, the more the lens flexes.3

  • The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye.
  • The lens is a clear structure about the size and shape of an M&M’s candy.
  • Both of these structures bend (refract) light entering your eye to focus the image on the retina, located on the inside back wall of your eye.

The lens, unlike the cornea, is somewhat flexible and can change shape with the help of a circular muscle that surrounds it. When you look at something at a distance, the circular muscle relaxes. When you look at something nearby, the muscle constricts, allowing the relatively elastic lens to curve and change its focusing power.

Presbyopia is caused by a hardening of the lens of your eye, which occurs with aging. As your lens becomes less flexible, it can no longer change shape to focus on close-up images. As a result, these images appear out of focus.

Do Vuity Eye Drops Really Work?

Vuity™  FDA approved drops can improve vision and make it easier to focus on objects at a distance. Vuity™  will work for you if you have low vision caused by presbyopia. Presbyopia is a normal part of aging, but it can cause blurry vision that is especially difficult to correct with glasses or contact lenses. Vuity™  is designed to trick your eye into thinking there is no change in the lens and the lens gets “younger” or the lens “sharper” again, making it easier to focus on objects close-up.

Clinical Study

In clinical studies where patients received one drop of Vuity™  in each eye once daily, this was measured by the proportion of patients achieving a 3-line gain or more reading a near vision eye chart without losing more than 1 line in a distance vision eye chart at Day 30, 3 hours after dosing.

Are Vuity™ Eye Drops Right For You?

1If you have low vision caused by presbyopia, then Vuity™ could be a good option for you. Presbyopia happens to almost everyone as they age and most people who develop it are between the ages of 40 and 60.  If you are younger than 40 and have not yet developed presbyopia, you may not need a drop to correct it. It is best to have your eyes checked by an optometrist to see if you have presbyopia. They will check your eyes to see what kind of vision correction is best for you.  If you are between the ages of 40 and 60, Vuity™ drops could be a good option for you. However, not everyone with presbyopia will have good luck with Vuity™ .

One drop in each eye, once daily to help improve near vision in presbyopia patients. If more than one type of eye drop is being used, administer at least 5 minutes apart.

Are Vuity™ Eye Drops Effective?

4The most important question to ask is, “will it work for me?”  There are many things to consider when evaluating if Vuity™ is right for you. Some factors to consider are your age, the severity of your low vision, your medical history, and your daily activities.  If you have good vision and have been trying to use glasses or contact lenses, but they give you headaches or make your eyes feel tired, Vuity™ drops could be a good option for you.  Vuity™ does not work for everyone, but your eye doctor at Boerne Vision Center can evaluate your vision during an eye exam and determine if Vuity™ is right for you.

The Bottom Line

2Vuity™ eye drops are effective in correcting blurry vision caused by presbyopia.  Not all blurry vision is caused by presbyopia so you will need a comprehensive eye exam and a valid prescription to purchase Vuity™. Boerne Vision Center is a Vuity™ provider and offers complete vision care which means we can evaluate your vision, consult with you on whether or not Vuity™ is right for you and support you with follow up care.  Vuity™ eye drops can cause side effects so it is advised that you consult with your eye doctor and also review the side effects before using Vuity™.    Below you will find a more extensive guide to Vuity™ eye drops. It includes more information about what they are used for, common side effects, and other helpful facts.
