Sports & Performance Vision
-
When parents think about helping their kids perform better in sports, they usually focus on practice, strength training, and coaching.
But there’s one performance factor that often goes unnoticed:
Vision.
Your child may be working hard to improve their game—but if their visual skills aren’t optimized, they could be missing a major advantage.
At Boerne Vision Center, we often see young athletes who train tirelessly but have never had their visual performance evaluated for sports. And for many of them, improving vision skills can make a meaningful difference in how they perform on the field, court, or course.
👁️ Sports Vision Is More Than 20/20 Vision
Most parents assume that if their child has 20/20 eyesight, their vision is already perfect for sports.
But sports require much more than basic clarity.
Athletic performance depends on several specialized visual abilities that work together with the brain and body.
These include:
Depth Perception
Depth perception helps athletes judge distance and speed. This is critical for sports like baseball, softball, and tennis, where tracking a fast-moving ball is essential.
Peripheral Awareness
Peripheral vision allows athletes to stay aware of players, movement, and opportunities happening around them—without looking directly at them.
This skill is especially important in football, soccer, and basketball, where split-second decisions matter.
Reaction Time
The faster the brain processes visual information, the faster the body can react.
For hitters, goalies, and quarterbacks, this can mean the difference between making the play—or missing it.
Visual Tracking
Tracking helps athletes follow moving objects smoothly and accurately.
This is essential for sports like:
- Baseball
- Softball
- Volleyball
- Tennis
- Golf
Contrast Sensitivity
Contrast sensitivity allows athletes to see objects clearly against different backgrounds.
For example, seeing a baseball against a bright sky or tracking a golf ball against the Hill Country landscape.
